The nearest village in this area is the beautiful seaside village of Plaka. Plaka is about 1km away. In Plaka there are a few taverns, cafeterias and shops, as well as a large pebble beach and a small harbour from where boats depart for the island of Spinalonga. The town of Elounda is less than 10 minutes away by car. The main city in the region, Agios Nikolaos, is 15-20 minutes away by car. The international airport of Heraklion is about 1 hour's drive away.

Location

Plaka is a picturesque Cretan village situated just above the sandy beaches of Almyrida. Its centre is the village square (platia), where there are several good taverns and cafes and the village has a traditional atmosphere. The view over the bay and the valley to the White Mountains is breathtaking. There are a few mini-markets and shops.

The small fishing village of Almyrida is now a delightful seaside resort. If you approach from the western end of the village, you will see an early basilica from the fifth century with a wonderful mosaic floor. Almyrida has a beautiful, cove-shaped harbour that keeps the beach protected and safe, making it an ideal place for young families. It also benefits from a gently sloping sandy beach, which allows access to the clear blue sea. There are mostly family-run taverns and cafés along the entire seafront, where you can enjoy the great local cuisine and scenery. There is a taxi rank, ATMs, a bakery, clothes shops, mini-markets and a pharmacy. There is a water sports base where you can rent and learn how to use windsurfing boards, kayaks and catamarans. There is also a PADI-certified diving centre. For mini-adventures, there is a two-hour boat trip that departs from the harbour and follows the coastline to beautiful snorkelling spots. Off the bay lies the small island of Karga, which is a nature reserve for many bird species. Plaka is about half an hour's drive from Chania Airport and an hour from Heraklion Airport.
