The older-looking harbour area has some characterful cafes and tavernas. Makrigialos is a find of pure Cretan nature. It is located east of Ierapetra, in eastern Crete, along a stretch of coastline with a number of secluded coves and quiet beaches, far from larger or more developed tourist resorts. The area of Makrigialos is ideally located in south-eastern Crete, to enjoy both the benefits of a relaxing beach holiday and as a starting point for exploring eastern Crete. It has the best beaches in south-eastern Crete, including two blue flag beaches, and enjoys the excellent North African-influenced climate.
