The Kissamos region combines natural beauty with numerous beaches, from Kastelli to Falasarna and along the west coast of Crete to Elafonisi and Cape Krios. Kastelli, Polyrineia and Falasarna were among the most important cities in ancient times, and a visit to the historic island of Gramvousa with its Venetian castle and the wild beauty of the coast at Balos is an experience not to be missed. Kissamos is not a resort town and has an unpolished, almost gloomy atmosphere compared to other towns on the north coast. There are two beaches in the town, separated by a promenade: sandy Mavros Molos to the west and pebbly Telonio to the east. The largest town and capital of the province of Kissamos is variously referred to as Kissamos or Kastelli, although the official name is the former.
