The hinterland of Maleme, Tavronitis and Kolimbari consists of countless olive groves and vineyards. Small hills with cypresses, plane trees and fig trees characterise the landscape.
Cultural highlights of Maleme and the surrounding area include the Moni Gonias monastery in Kolimbari at the foot of the Rodopou peninsula, Polirrinia near Kissamos and the Agia Triada monastery on the Akrotiri peninsula. A visit to the oldest olive tree in the mountain village of Vouves is also well worth a trip.
