Tholos is a tranquil village in the Kavousi area of Crete. Kavousi, in north-eastern Crete, is the oldest village on the island, with permanent and uninterrupted settlement since 4,700 BC, as evidenced by archaeological data and its 120 archaeological sites.
It is located in the natural and geographical centre of the Lasithi Prefecture at an altitude of 140 metres at the foot of the Thripti Mountains. It is 26 km from Agios Nikolaos, 20 km from Ierapetra and 40 km from Sitia. Kavousi has approximately 600 inhabitants.
The neighbouring villages are Pachia Ammos to the west and Lastros to the east. The only access to the sea is via Tholos beach, about three kilometres from the village centre. The sea cannot be reached elsewhere due to the mountains and cliffs. Here you will find a little-explored stalactite cave (Theriospilio). Kavousi has a very large area of olive trees.
