The 70 km journey from Heraklion takes just under an hour. Alongside Chania, Agios Nikolaos is considered by many Crete enthusiasts to be the most beautiful town on this Greek island. In the centre of the town is Lake Voulismeni, which is connected to the sea by a canal. It reaches a depth of 64 m at its centre and is associated with many Greek myths. It is surrounded on two sides by numerous taverns and cafés, from which you can look out over the colourful fishing boats bobbing in the calm water. On the other two sides, a rocky coast rises steeply, at the top of which is a small park with fortified hiking trails that are ideal for walking and taking photographs.
