When ships depart for Rhodes or other islands, the echo of their sirens can be heard from all the mountains around the bay. The area around Sitia also has the most varied landscape in the whole of Crete, making it an ideal starting point for visiting the sights in eastern Crete. Sitia has its own airport. The airport in Heraklion is 120 kilometres away.
