Elounta was a small fishing village on the Mirabello Bay on the island of Crete. Although fishing still makes up a large part of life in this very picturesque area, tourism has become the main industry in Elounda. The town belongs to the municipality of Agios Nikolaos. The place is very popular with European tourists and has numerous hotels, including several 5-star hotels. Elounda is also the closest major city to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. The city is only a 10-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos and the village of Plaka (Lasithi).

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi district and is located on the Mirabello Bay in northeastern Crete, just 40 minutes from Heraklion International Airport. Geographically, the city is well protected from strong winds, so that water sports and swimming are possible here almost all year round. Although Agios Nikolaos has fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, there are several banks, supermarkets, all kinds of shops, doctors, a modern high standard hospital, a public swimming pool and tennis courts, a marina, a harbour, a cinema, a theatre, gyms, a 9 hole golf course, schools from kindergarten to 6 level high school and generally all the amenities you would expect in a modern European city.
The microclimate is one of the best in Greece and the temperate temperatures rarely rise above 30 degrees in summer and rarely fall below 15 degrees in winter. This wonderful dry climate, combined with the natural beauty of the area, has attracted most of the top hotels in Greece to work here.
