Makrigialos ("long beach" in Greek) is one of the quieter, less developed destinations in Crete, with some of the best beaches in eastern Crete. It is a quiet, friendly place with a cosy little fishing harbour and a small sandy beach within the village. The beach is shallow and suitable for small children. The older-looking harbour area has some characterful cafes and tavernas. Makrigialos is a find of pure Cretan nature. It is located east of Ierapetra, in eastern Crete, along a stretch of coastline with a number of secluded coves and quiet beaches, far from larger or more developed tourist resorts.
