Location

Kavousi in north-eastern Crete – It is the oldest village in Crete with a permanent and uninterrupted settlement since 4,700 BC, as evidenced by archaeological data and its 120 archaeological sites.
It is located in the natural and geographical centre of the prefecture of Lasithi, at an altitude of 140 metres, at the foot of the Thripti Mountains. It is 26 km from Agios Nikolaos, 20 km from Ierapetra and 40 km from Sitia. Kavousi has a population of around 600. The neighbouring villages are Pachia Ammos to the west and Lastros to the east. The only access to the sea is the beach of Tholos, which is about three kilometres from the village centre. The sea cannot be reached elsewhere due to the mountains and cliffs in front of it. Here you will find a barely explored stalactite cave (Theriospilio).
