Elounda was a small fishing village on the Mirabello Bay on the island of Crete. Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi district and is located on the Mirabello Bay in northeastern Crete, just 40 minutes from Heraklion International Airport. Geographically, the city is well protected from strong winds, so that water sports and swimming are possible here almost all year round.
Although Agios Nikolaos has a population of less than 20,000, it has several banks, supermarkets, all kinds of shops, doctors, a modern high-standard hospital, a public swimming pool and tennis courts, a marina, a harbour, a cinema, a theatre, fitness studios, a 9-hole golf course, schools from kindergarten to 6-level secondary school and generally all the amenities one would expect in a modern European city. The microclimate is one of the best in Greece and the temperate temperatures rarely rise above 30 degrees in summer and rarely fall below 15 degrees in winter. This wonderfully dry climate, combined with the natural beauty of the area, has led most of Greece's top hotels to operate here.
