Elounda was a small fishing village on the Mirabello Bay on the island of Crete. The place is very popular with European tourists and has numerous hotels, including several 5-star hotels. Elounda is also the closest major city to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. The city is a 10-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos and the village of Plaka (Lasithi).

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi region and is located on the Bay of Mirabello in northeastern Crete, just 45 minutes from Heraklion International Airport. Geographically, the city is well protected from strong winds, making it possible to enjoy water sports and swimming almost all year round. Although Agios Nikolaos has a population of less than 20,000, it has several banks, supermarkets, all kinds of shops, doctors, a modern high standard hospital, a public swimming pool and tennis courts, a marina, a harbour, a cinema, a theatre, gyms, a 9 hole golf course, schools from kindergarten up to a 6 level high school and in general all the amenities you would expect in a modern European city.

The microclimate is one of the best in Greece, with moderate temperatures that rarely exceed 30°C in the summer and rarely drop below 15°C in the winter. This wonderfully dry climate, together with the natural beauty of the area, has led most of Greece's high-class hotels to settle here.
