Elounda was a small fishing village on Mirabello Bay on the island of Crete. Although fishing still plays a major role in this very picturesque area, tourism has become Elounda's most important industry. The town belongs to the municipality of Agios Nikolaos. It is very popular with European tourists and has numerous hotels, including several 5-star hotels. Elounda is also the nearest large town to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi district and is located on Mirabello Bay in the north-east of Crete, just 40 minutes from Heraklion International Airport. Geographically, the town is well protected from strong winds, so you can enjoy water sports and swimming here almost all year round. Although Agios Nikolaos has less than 20,000 inhabitants, there are several banks, supermarkets, shops of all kinds, doctors, a modern hospital with high standards, a public swimming pool and tennis courts, a marina, a harbour, a cinema, a theatre, gyms, a 9-hole golf course, schools from nursery to 6-form secondary school and, in general, all the amenities you would expect in a modern European town.
The microclimate is one of the best in Greece, with moderate temperatures rarely rising above 30 degrees in summer and rarely falling below 15 degrees in winter. This wonderful dry climate, combined with the natural beauty of the area, has attracted most of Greece's top hotels to operate here.
