Elafonissi is located 76 km west of Chania and 5 km south of Chrysoskalista Monastery, at the southwesternmost point of Crete. Elafonissi is a rectangle divided into two parts by the sea, giving the impression of being a divided island. Elafonissi is a NATURA 2000 protected area. The island is covered with dunes, sand lilies and junipers (like cedars). Endangered Careta turtles and various other rare animal species nest here and it is strictly forbidden to remove any plants, animals or sand.

The sand, which gets its colour from thousands of broken shells, is pink in many places. At the break in the peninsula, the water is no deeper than 1 metre, forming a lagoon suitable for children. You can easily cross the lagoon to reach the "island". Feel free to take your belongings with you, as the water is very shallow.
