Ierapetra is located at the narrowest point of Crete: it is only about fifteen kilometres from the south to the north coast. The largest town on the south coast of Crete is Ierapetra, which is also the southernmost town in Europe. Due to its proximity to Libya and Egypt, it has an African climate. The north wind, Boreas, moderates the heat in summer. The pretty old town with its narrow streets is located around the fishing harbour with its clock tower, harbour fort and small churches. Next to it is the harbour with moorings for ferries, cargo ships and excursion boats. From the old town, it is only a few steps to the long promenade with cafés, taverns and ice cream parlours. Otherwise, Ierapetra is dominated almost exclusively by modern buildings.
The well-maintained sandy and pebble beach begins in the centre and stretches for two kilometres to the east. The gently sloping beach is also ideal for children and offers deckchair and parasol hire.
