The village of Kounali has a tavern and a few kafeneions and is close to Latsida and Neapolis, which offer many amenities.
Milatos and Milatos beach are a 10-minute drive from Kounali. Agios Nikolaos is a tranquil little town spread over several hills. The coastline is long and winding, and a small inland lake connected to the sea serves as a harbour for fishing boats. Apart from being a holiday resort, Agios Nikolaos is primarily important as the administrative centre for the whole of eastern Crete. This gives the town a lot of authenticity despite all the visitors. There is no old town, as the town is still young in its current form. Nevertheless, it has a long history. As early as 2700 years ago, the small harbour town of 'Kamara' belonged to the ancient city-state of Lato.
