The villa is located in Gouves, a seaside resort near Heraklion. Heraklion is the lively capital of Crete with its Venetian harbour and historic old town. It is the cradle of the first advanced civilisation in Europe and the centre of Crete today. The main attractions are the old town and the beautiful Venetian harbour. In Greek mythology, this was the harbour where Heracles (better known as Hercules) landed to capture the Cretan bull. Typically Crete, the cityscape was influenced by various cultures: after the Greeks came the Arabs, then the Byzantines, followed by the Venetians. During this time, Heraklion was called Chándax or Candia. After that, the Turks ruled, under whom the city was called Megalo Kastro. Unfortunately, the port city was repeatedly occupied, which also brought destruction, most recently through the bombing of the German armed forces in the Second World War. The once large number of attractions was thus greatly decimated over time, but a few relics from the Venetian era, such as the Lions Fountain and the Loggia, remain.

Today, Heraklion is the economic, cultural and political centre of Crete. The university is based here, as are various domestic and European authorities. With a population of around 175,000, Heraklion is the fourth largest city in Greece and is home to the largest seaport on the island.
