Spilia is a charming traditional village situated just 3 km from the seaside town of Kolymbari. Nestled in a verdant plain of lush olive groves and fragrant citrus trees, this idyllic spot offers peace and Mediterranean charm. Spilia is located about 30 km west of the city of Chania and has a population of around 275.
The name "Spilia" means "cave" and refers to the cave of Agios Ioannis, which houses a small church. Legend has it that Saint John lived here after fleeing from the Middle East. The altar at the end of the cave is said to have served as his bed. A beautiful hiking trail leads from the cave through a gorge to the historic Katholiki Monastery.
Kolymbari, just a few minutes' drive away, is a picturesque seaside village at the intersection of the north coast of western Crete and the Rodopos peninsula.
