Elounda was a small fishing village on the Mirabello Bay on the island of Crete. Although fishing still makes up a large part of life in this very picturesque area, tourism has become the most important industry in Elounda. The town belongs to the municipality of Agios Nikolaos. It is very popular with European tourists and has numerous hotels, including several 5-star hotels. Elounda is also the closest major city to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. The city is a 10-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos and the village of Plaka (Lasithi).
